I am having a bit of a problem with both buying and selling of magic items. I use a mix of RM2 and RMSS and I cant seem to find any guidelines for prices of Potent, Most Potent, etc items.

If one of your players wishes to buy or sell an item how do you deal with it ??

Your help is appreciated.

I take it you must have a copy of character law? Within it's pages are good guidlines for the buying & selling of items of such worth.

Of course much depends on the world your gaming in (middle-earth for example would not be very suitable for this chart).

I believe there is also a comprehensive chart/system in the RMSS core rules book.

There is a good price index in the Treasure Companion. The sale and resale charts in Gamemaster Law are good, and in RMCIV is a good way to figure the price/cost of superior crafted items. In the Alchemy Companion there is a cost index for the more powerfully made items. There is also the rolls for magic items.

Selling magic items does not work well for most systems. I mean you give the players what you think is a cool item, and they turn around and sell it for more money than you would have liked them to have. Ah well, you live and you learn.

Thanks guys. I have found the charts/tables and I have a pretty good feel for the prices now.

I dont normally roll for treasure but give monster/NPC what I think is appropriate and what the party would like/need. But as they get higher in levels they sell off their old items. But they never have more money than I wish ... I have plenty of tricks to keep them poor if I desire ;)

How do you keep them poor?

I had an interesting conversation about this the other day. I used to think when I was younger that keeping a party poor was one of the cornerstones of a successful group. I have to say that I really don't think that works anymore.

As a party progresses they tend to expand and want more things (armies, warships, castles, land)and without gold most of these ambitions are non starters. Don't forget that after spending these enormous amounts of money most parties will remain poor (the upkeep alone will usually make sure of that).

Not only that but I feel that it is an integral part of group expansion that a PC who has got to a decent level can have the opportunity to field his own army or sail his own ship or even own his own castle. The options for the gamesmaster & players alike become limitless. Of course I'm still very strict on how much gold can effectively be carried & really there's only so much that a PC can buy over the counter.

I think where one has to be harsh is magical items etc. This can unbalance a game at it's most basic level and a close watch must always be kept here.

Just my 2 GPs worth.

Yeah, I'm in a Traveller game where we just got a boatload of money (almost literally - we salvaged a derelict spaceship) but we're still not really rich. We used that money to buy ourselves a new starship and a robot, but the upkeep on starships is ridiculous. Also, my character is addicted to anagathics, so he has a 20,000Cr/mo habit he needs money for. That sure keeps him poor.

Anyway, I have no problem with giving the party money if they earn it. Magic items, like lann said, are a different story.

And who are these people who just have tons of money around, and are willing to buy the magic item? That's a LOT of free cash, you know...

I have a magic rich world the dwarves and elves get along and alchemists are plentiful, but still expensive. At low levels, characters have little money, where wealth exists, compitence, risk, and luck will earn you money. So by 20 level, you can buy that intelligent mithril sword, it is merely very expensive.
