Arcane Guarding

Azryn stilled. Even here, she could feel the rhythmic falling of the bones in the oracle's cave. Cautiously she emptied her mind, and in that darkness she wove a line from herself to the sleeping newborn. The night breeze dried the sweat forming on her face, while she worked to weave the line into a flawless circle. The circle complete, she opened her senses in the silence of the circle and felt the seeking rhythm flow around them and away from them. Azryn gently picked up the child and headed for the darkness outside, the slumbering mother already forgotten.

The Arcane Guarding spell list is an extension of the scrying protection spells presented in the Mentalism Companion. Divination, and protection from divination, are traditional powers of the great wizards of fantasy. The creation of an Arcane list allows the recreation of such powers in Rolemaster. Closed Arcane lists are usually rare, are always dangerous to use, and are extraordinarily difficult to learn for all but those who have dedicated themselves to the study of magic. Thus the Arcane Guarding list can provide limited protection to the most powerful of mages, whatever their realm may be.

This list is closely related to the Vision Guard list presented in the Mentalism Companion and therefore fits well into the current Rolemaster spell system. Arcane Guarding is subtly but definitely less powerful than Vision Guard. There are other differences, but the most significant difference between the two lists is in the scope of targets that may be affected. At low levels, mages using the Arcane Guarding list are only able to protect themselves from scrying. As the list is learned the range of subjects who can be protected is gradually increased. It also takes two arcane spells to duplicate the effects of individual spells found on the Vision Guard list, which means more time, more power, and much more risk are involved in casting.

Definitions

1. -25 to any 1 specific scrying attempt (skill or spell) that the caster is aware of.

2. Allows the caster to be the subject of spells on this list.

3. Detects scrying or divination attempts within the area of effect. The caster may concentrate on a different area each round.

4. Conceals one curse or destiny on the subject, rendering the curse or destiny undetectable by Detect Curse or Detect Destiny spells. It is still active, just hidden from magical detection.

5. Allows another being to be the subject of spells on this list.

6. Deflects scrying attempts on the subject (touched at the time of casting) onto a similar subject.  The scryer must make an alertness maneuver to notice the mistake.  The decoy must be within 10' per level at the time of casting, or the spell fails.

7. All deeds performed by the subject while this spell is active are "shadowed" to appropriate spells.  For the purposes of appropriate spells, the information gained about the subject will be shrouded in shadows.

8. The subject may portray falsehoods as truths for the spell's duration, if the subject resists any information gathering or mind reading spells.  If the caster of the mind reading spell is aware through other means of the subjects deceit, or if the false truth spell ends before the mind reading spell, the deception will be apparent.

9. The subject may mislead the caster of any Anticipate or Anticipations spell.  The caster receives incorrect information  regarding the subjects intended actions.  In the case of Anticipate spells which grant the caster bonuses, such as Anticipate Missile, these bonuses are negated by this spell.

10. Allows an object to be the subject of spells on this list.

11. A false vision is placed upon the subject of this spell for scryers to find.  It must be fairly simple and may not portray events lasting longer than this spells duration.  This spell can be defeated by piercing or repeated scrying (outlasting this spell),  or by a flaw in the vision, such as the unlikelyhood of events, or the repetition of the vision.

12. Protects the subject of the spell by clouding any form of divinatory magic cast upon the subject, limiting any scryers to 50% of the information they normally would have received.  This effect last until the duration runs out, the spell is cancelled or dispelled, or the defense is pierced, whichever happens first.

13. The caster will know when any scrying or divinations are attempted against him for the spells duration.

14.

15. Allows a place to be the subject of spells on this list.

16. As Shadow Past, except absolutely no information about the subject will be revealed.

17. Any attempt to divine information about the protected subject (touched at the time of casting) will receive false information, with the elements specified by the caster at the time of casting.

18. The subject appears to have no presence for the duration, and cannot be detected by Presence-type spells.

19. Caster may use this spell to determine the location and identity of a scryer or diviner whose activities have been detected.

20.  Structure gets a RR at the caster's lvl vs any Scrying Magic or Base Attack Spells.  Unless the GM decrees otherwise, this spell must be cast on a regular basis during the building's construction.

25. As Shadow Past, except all deeds performed by the subject will appear as if someone else is performing them.  The false actor is chosen by the caster at the time of casting, and the spell's effectiveness depends on how well the caster can visual the fall guy.  Magical studying is usually superior to observation of the fall guy.

30. The memories of the subject will be concealed from mind scanning spells such as Inner Thoughts, Mind Scan, and Mind Probe.  Memories may be hidden at a rate of 1 scene per round, and the caster's level is the maximum number of memories that may be hidden.  The memories are still available to the subject.

50. As Conceal Memories, except the hidden memories may be replaced with false ones.  The subject has access to both the real and the fake memories.

Notes: One of spells 2,5,10 or 15 needs to be cast within 1 minute of casting the other spells on this list that can affect different targets. Thus, the caster could not cast guarding spells on others unless he also casted the 5th level spell Affect Other.
