Notes

When first encountered Alaric appears to be a young foppish Man, no older than 25 or so. His skin is pale; he is good-looking and extremely naturally charismatic. He always has an amusing tale to tell, perhaps of some recent trading trip up North or down South. However as the PCs get to know him more, and as he learns to trust them he may let this façade fall slightly, his gray Elven eyes hint that he is older than he appears, his manner may suddenly change to become stern and serious as he takes charge of a dangerous situation or he tells some ancient tale. He may even take one or two of the PCs into his confidence, telling them more of who he really is and what he is really doing in the North. Then as suddenly he slips back into role and becomes, once again, Alaric the foppish young Trader.

He is, in fact, working on the side of the Free Peoples of Middle Earth and the White Council. When finished traveling he returns to his homeland of Rivendell and is actually a distant nephew of Elrond. He has recently been enlisted as a full Ranger or Arnor and hence carries, hidden at all times, one of their eresselen (see above). Most importantly he is currently working for none other than Gandalf the Grey, as a Spy.

His purpose in this scenario is to give the PCs a helping hand, to steer them in the right direction to start with, then to die valiantly and pass on to the PCs some rather useful artifacts that will help them in their continuing quest to recover the stolen palantíri.

The best place for Alaric to die is during the final fight between the Mulkan and the Verinen Metsästäjät over the Horn of Nimraug.

To this end he carries a letter written in Westron which, when he dies, will appear clutched in his fist, or be thrust into the hand of some helping PC as Alaric passes away...

To My Friends...

If you are reading this then I can only assume that the worse has happened and that mortality has caught me up. To you I leave my sturdy Yew staff, my silver ring of Friendship, my Elven cloak and my bracelet of Tur. Take also my eresselen, my silver star – a sign that I am not what you may have thought of me. For I am in fact Alaric Half-Elven, also a Ranger and some would also say a Spy for the Free Peoples of Middle Earth. I am a friend of Beretar and Aragorn the Rangers, and not so much as a friend, but a humble servant of Gandalf the Wise. If you have the Palantíri then I beseech you to flee with the smaller to some safe Haven, such as Rivendell perhaps. The larger you should leave with the Mulkan, for it is too large to move without the Enemy becoming aware and I trust that they have a way to hide it and they can be trusted. If you have lost the Palantíri then I can only despair… for I feel that these artefacts are somehow linked to some greater pending event.

Good luck.

Special Abilities

Fearful appearance: during the first encounter anyone within 50' of Nimraug or attacked by It's breath weapon must make an RR versus a 15th Level attack. Failure by up to 50 points causes the victim to flee, by up to 100 points causes the victim to freeze to the spot and failure over 100 points causes the victim to die from a heart attack. During a 2nd encounter this attack reduces to 10th Level and then during any further encounters to 5th Level. Any victim who fails this roll may roll again each successive round until they completely succeed.

Notes

Can make 4 claw (HCl) attacks, one tail attack and one bite (HBi) attack per round. All extremities can attack more than one target, with a –15 per additional target. One target can only be attacked with 2 adjacent extremities.

Peoples

Unless otherwise noted, all other statistics are as per the relevant level for that Profession on the Master Character Table p. 252/253 Rule Book.

Mulkan Kaupunki

The village of Mulkan is inhabited by 80 people, 60 of whom are capable of fighting.

Only 20 villagers would ever volunteer at any one time to leave the village to fight and their viisas would not even try to get more to come (she cannot order them to do things, and besides, everyone knows that this would leave too few people behind).

A very cautious warrior. Always studies situations before turning to violence, but completely committed in a fight preferring to kill rather than leave injured.

She avoids close combat, just dashing in to tend the wounded and always seems to have just the right herb, including many rare ones capable of great healing.

Verinen Metsästäjät

The Verinen Metsästäjät (La. 'Bloody Hunters') number only 50, but 40 of these are good fighters.

Ivory bead necklace: x3 Multiplier, allows user to cast any spell to their level from Ice Law Mage List x3 per day at no cost. However each time the user must resist a 10th Lvl Essence attack or receive 1 Corruption Point. She says she 'found' these beads when she was young and this is actually true, the beads were around the neck of a half-frozen Lumimie corpse washed up out of the Hûb Helchui (aka. 'Bay of Forochel').

Bone finger ring: +20DB

Ivory spike earring: +20 OB Base Spells

Magic

Directed Spells +90 OB, Base Spells +38 OB, 54 PPs

Open Essence Lists: Physical Enhancement, Essence's Ways, Essence Hand, Spell Ways, Essence Perceptions, Illusions, Spirit Mastery

Mage Lists: Ice Law, Earth Law, Light Law, Wind Law, Lofty Bridge, Living Change.

Notes

Kylmyyskala is the Verinen Metsästäjät's young henkinimittäjä (La. 'spirit namer'). She inherited her name due to her cold-blooded lack of emotion. Kylmyyskala owns a set of ivory Loitsuhelmet (La. 'spell beads') and rides a White Warg. The Warg is a recent gift from the Witch King himself for her loyal service.

She knows the Spirit Wraith Dîndae, though she never allows either it or the Warg near her village for fear of alienating her fellow Lumimie villagers.

Avoids face to face combat at all costs, resorting to Lofty Bridge (Leaving), Illusions (Invisibility), Essence Hand (any), Spirit Mastery (any) and then casting Ice Law spells (Ice Bolt and Cold Ball) from long range and then run for it with Living Change (Fast Sprint).

Riimulaulaja (La. 'rune singer')

Items

Set of 3 black-steel throwing knives: +10 OB, fumble 01, Puncture (C), base range 50', weight 0.5lb, -25 melee OB, +10 missile OB; with the +10 item bonus this makes a total of +20OB for missile

Magic

Directed Spells +29 OB, Base Spells +24 OB, 14 PPs

Open Channelling Lists: Detection Mastery, Sound/Light Ways, Calm Spirits

Animist Lists: Direct Channelling, Blood Ways, Bone/Muscle Ways, Organ Ways.

Notes

Riimulaulaja is the Verinen Metsästäjät's viisas (La. 'wise one'). She is the most obviously influential person in the heimo (La. 'clan'), due to her age and experience.

Avoids close combat, preferring to use her throwing knives or 'cheap' spells at range such as Calm Spirits (Calm I or II) vs. weaker targets, Calm Spirits (Stunning) vs. stronger targets. When pressed into close combat she then uses her 'expensive' reversed Heal spells such as Bone/Muscle Ways (Major Fracture Repair) for some immediately nasty effects.

Since learning the Dark Ways, she may now use her Healing spell lists in reverse to do harm, though still at touch range. In combat she tries to touch her opponent with a 45 OB Tooth and Claw attack, if any hits are indicated no hits are actually done but one of her reverse-Heal spells may be cast.

Rautakäsi (La. 'iron hand')

6th Level Warrior

LvlHitsATDBShGrMovMMelee
OB
Missile
OB
699RL40*Y*Y593ms73lb

Languages: Labba (5), Westron (2), Black Speech(1)

Items

Morning Star with points made of Mithril: +20 OB, does a Cold critical one level less than primary.

Spear: +10 OB.

Silver six-pointed star: Openly worn as a cloak-pin. Any Arnorian Ranger could immediately identify as an eresselen (see Arnor: the People p. 173). For anyone allied with the Free Peoples this usually adds +10 to DB and RRs, but all it has brought Rautakäsi since he murdered the rightful owner is bad luck. This could assist in any final fight where he is about to deal a killing blow to one of the PCs, such as blowing his cloak across his eyes and causing him to fumble his deadly morning star.

Other Skills

Expert sled-dog handler (Animal Mastery 90), experienced wanderer of the snowy wastes (Wilderness Survival 80, Track 64, Fauna Lore 70), and master pyöreä talo builder (Snow Crafting 80).

Notes

Rautakäsi is the Verinen Metsästäjät's tietäjä (La. 'one who knows'). He is the strongest warrior in the heimo.

Loves close combat, swinging his Mithril Morning Star with gusto! He has been getting some stick from the lesser clan members for some recent dramatic fumbles, though he's not realised it's since acquiring a silver star-shaped brooch. He is one of the only Lossoth to use a shield and greaves.

Both Riimulaulaja and Rautakäsi could have been Good leaders of their heimo, but Kylmyyskala's whispering advice over the years (since she found the spell beads) has twisted both of them, and then the rest of the heimo, towards her Dark purposes. Kylmyyskala is the true power behind the throne.
