Words from the Wise (Guys)

An Editorial Rant

Welcome

To the thirty-eighth issue of The Guild Companion.

Other Hands

In news just in, Chris Seeman has announced that he is ceasing publication of Other Hands as a print magazine. He has found it impossible to obtain either compromise or explanation from Tolkien Enterprises. The Other Hands website (at http://www.otherhands.com) is back in action as a gaming and scholarly resources for all who are interested in Middle-Earth. Chris Seeman hopes to upload as much of the material from the magazine's back issues onto the website's archive sections.

It had been Chris' intention to produce further supplements to fill in some of the more unknown regions and time periods of Middle-Earth. The future of these modules is currently uncertain.

Origins Awards Nominations Round

The nominations round for this year's Origins Awards has been and gone. Unfortunately we did not receive sufficient votes from the Academy to be short-listed. We just try harder for next year.

Infantry Commissions Purchased

I complained in last month's editorial about the difficulties of finding the prices of infantry commissions during the Napoleonic Wars. On the very day I intended to submit the second draft of GURPS Age of Napoleon, I chanced to go for a walk into town at lunch and wandered into a bookshop. Randomly walking round the shop, I picked up a copy of "The Sharpe Companion". Buried in a sidebar was a complete set of prices for infantry commissions. A major's commission cost 2600 pounds; a lieutenant colonel's commission cost 3500 pounds. (Multiply by 40 for the equivalent sum in today's money).

Having made that final tweak, I've now sent off the second draft of GURPS Age of Napoleon. It now goes to Steve Jackson himself for approval to proceed into the editing phase and beyond. Keep your fingers crossed.

Farewell (for now ...)

I'm off for a short break before concentrating my efforts on TGC's new hybrid Rolemaster/d20 modules. Our next issue will appear in May 2002, but until then,

Keep gaming and have fun!
