Haven
A Monastic Base List (Channeling)

Copyright Ross Henton ©2002

Edited by Lowell R. Matthews for The Guild Companion

Editor's Notes: (1) The GM may wish to consider allowing certain other Channeling professions access to this list and/or its companions, "Holy Knowledge" and "Sanction". The Monastic is considered a variant profession of the Cleric (SL); other potential candidate professions would include the Astrologer (Hybrid, SL), Healer (Pure, SL), and Shaman (Pure, RC2). In any case, Monastics would often be encountered in the company of these professionals or Channeling Semis like Dervishes (RC2), Moon Mages (RC3), Paladins (RC1), Rangers (SL), Sleuths (RC3), or Witch Hunters (RC7).

(2) Some of the high-level spells on this list can inflict Holy or Slaying criticals. Those should be rolled as appropriate on the Arms Law Large Creature Table 8.14 for all creatures except Super-Large Creatures, which use their own Table 8.15.

(3) The three Altar Ward spells (levels 9, 14, and 19) are designed for naturally concurrent use. If so used, the auras of the lower-level Altar Wards should be assumed to lie just outside those of the higher-level spells, so that the Admonishing effect should occur prior to the damaging Rebuking effect, which should occur prior to the probably lethal Avenging affect. Each successive Altar Ward requires a separate RR.

Author's Note: Spells marked "(*)" (the printer's dagger) must be cast upon sanctified ground. These spells are designed to protect the safety of the believer taking refuge on sanctified ground as well as to protect the temple itself. They may also be used to guard a solar circle (e.g., Stonehenge), a shrine, or any other place considered sanctified ground—no actual building is necessary.

1—CLEANSE (F): Caster may physically clean an area.

2—PREPARE GROUND (F): Caster may prepare the foundations or other area delineating a temple or other religious structure under construction for the appropriate rituals necessary to sanctify the ground for worship (the details of the sanctification rituals will vary according to the tenets of the religion). Normally, a structure built on sanctified ground will not be subject to the ravages of time and/or natural forces.

3—PREPARE ALTAR (F(*)): Caster may prepare the altar (or any other type of primary location at which worship services and channeling directly from the god to the priests will center) for the appropriate rituals necessary to sanctify the altar for worship (the details of the sanctification rituals will vary according to the tenets of the religion).

4—PREPARE FONT (F(*)): Caster may prepare the font (or equivalent vessel) for the appropriate rituals necessary to create and maintain (un)holy water (the details of the appropriate rituals necessary will vary according to the tenets of the religion).

5—HAVEN I (F): Caster calls into being an invisible protective sphere about himself. Any persons or creatures not of the caster's faith must make a RR to cross the boundary of the Haven.

6—SANCTUARY I (F(*)): Caster calls into being an invisible protective barrier that conforms to and covers the area of any one temple or other similar area sanctified to the caster's god. Any persons opposed to the caster's religion or having hostile intent toward the caster, the temple, or those inside must make a RR to cross the boundary of the Sanctuary.

7—HAVEN II (EF): As Haven I, except any persons or creatures not of the caster's faith who attempt to cross the boundary of the Haven will take an automatic "A" Electricity critical. (Some other critical type may be substituted to reflect more appropriately the sphere of influence of the caster's deity.)

8—SANCTUARY II (EF(*)): As Sanctuary I, except any persons opposed to the caster's religion or having hostile intent toward the caster, the temple, or those inside who attempt to cross the boundary of the Sanctuary will take an automatic "A" Electricity critical. (Some other critical type may be substituted to reflect more appropriately the sphere of influence of the caster's deity.)

9—ALTAR WARD I (Altar Ward of Admonishing) (F(*)), RR Mod −20: Any persons attempting to desecrate, damage, or physically touch the altar protected by this spell (unless they are ordained members of the caster's priesthood) must first make a RR or be unable to do so.

10—HAVEN III (EF): As Haven II, except a "B" severity critical is delivered.

11—SANCTUARY III (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except a "B" severity critical is delivered.

12—HAVEN IV (EF): As Haven II, except a "C" severity critical is delivered.

13—SANCTUARY IV (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except a "C" severity critical is delivered.

14—ALTAR WARD II (Altar Ward of Rebuking) (F(*)), RR Mod −20: As Altar Ward I, except any targets must make a RR or take an "E" Electricity critical. (Some other critical type may be substituted to reflect more appropriately the sphere of influence of the caster's deity.)

15—HAVEN V (EF): As Haven II, except a "D" severity critical is delivered.

16—SANCTUARY V (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except a "D" severity critical is delivered.

17—HAVEN VI (EF): As Haven II, except an "E" severity critical is delivered.

18—SANCTUARY VI (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except an "E" severity critical is delivered.

19—ALTAR WARD TRUE (Altar Ward of Avenging) (F(*)), RR Mod −20: As Altar Ward I, except any targets must make a RR or take 1–5 Slaying criticals.

20—LORD HAVEN (EF): As Haven II, except a Holy critical is delivered.

25—LORD SANCTUARY (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except a Holy critical is delivered.

30—HAVEN TRUE (EF): As Haven II, except a Slaying critical is delivered.

50—SANCTUARY TRUE (EF(*)): As Sanctuary II, except a Slaying critical is delivered.
