Torturer Base List (Channeling)

Edited by Lowell R. Matthews for The Guild Companion

Editor's Notes
(1) This list is a companion to Afflictions of the Body and Afflictions of the Soul

(2) In normal usage, the torture spells on this list inflict temporary damage, essentially a mental illusion, by stimulating the proper nerves or brain cortices.  The "Mind" criticals inflicted are Stress and Depression criticals from the RC3, and Stun and Neuro criticals from the RC5

1—Preparation I (FM):  This spell prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of levels 2–4.  A victim can only survive the infliction of one Preparation spell in a period determined by his Constitution:

Option 1:  Period = (100 − CO score) hr, minimum 1 hr.

Option 2:  Period = (50 − CO bonus) hr, minimum 1 hr.

Editor's Note:  Option 1 yields a straightforward linear distribution.  Option 2 yields a normal distribution and accounts for special modifiers to CO bonus from race or special abilities.  GM's may also wish to consider making individual races or cultures particularly resistant or susceptible to torture by this list.

A Preparation spell must be cast successfully in order to preserve the victim from death.  It makes the victim "feel" the pain and agony associated with the various "Affliction" spells without actually suffering any concussion-hit loss (or other real damage).  Once the target has failed his resistance to a Preparation spell, he gains no further resistance attempts against the spells it governs (i.e., for Preparation I, levels 2–4).  Once the duration has expired, all damage is removed.  However, the inflammatory conditions (aches and pains) will remain to subside normally over time.

The Torturer may adjust the result of the criticals delivered by his spells according to the number of ranks he has developed in Ambush.  This allows a skilled Torturer more variety in the pain and suffering that he can deliver.  Note:  A target attacked by any "Affliction" spell without Preparation resists such spells at twice his normal level, but sustains actual physical damage.

2—Stun I (M):  Target suffers an "A" Stun critical (RC5).

3—Stress I (M):  Target suffers an "A" Stress critical (RC3).

4—Depression I (M):  Target suffers an "A" Depression critical (RC3).

5—Preparation II (FM):  As Preparation I, except it prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of levels 6–9.

6—Neuro I (M):  Target suffers an "A" Neuro critical (RC5).

7—Stun II (M):  Target suffers a "B" Stun critical.

8—Stress II (M):  Target suffers a "B" Stress critical.

9—Depression II (M):  Target suffers a "B" Depression critical.

10—Preparation III (FM):  As Preparation I, except it prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of levels 11–14.

11—Neuro II (M):  Target suffers a "B" Neuro critical.

12—Stun III (M):  Target suffers a "C" Stun critical.

13—Stress III (M):  Target suffers a "C" Stress critical.

14—Depression III (M):  Target suffers a "C" Depression critical.

15—Preparation IV (FM):  As Preparation I, except it prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of levels 16–19.

16—Neuro III (M):  Target suffers a "C" Neuro critical.

17—Stun IV (M):  Target suffers a "D" Stun critical.

18—Stress IV (M):  Target suffers a "D" Stress critical.

19—Depression IV (M):  Target suffers a "D" Depression critical.

20—Preparation True (FM):  As Preparation I, except it prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of levels 25 and 30.

25—Neuro IV (M):  Target suffers a "D" Neuro critical.

30—Neuro True (M):  Target suffers an "E" Neuro critical.

50—Mental Affliction (FM):  As Preparation I, except this spell has increased range and duration and it prepares the victim to receive the special torture spells on this list of any level without further Preparation.
