Words from the Wise (Guys)

An Editorial Rant

Welcome

To the forty-third issue of The Guild Companion.

Critical Mass and a Vicious Circle

In last month's editorial, we noted that a suggestion had been made on ICE's official forums that The Guild Companion should become a subscription-based magazine. An online poll was set up to ascertain the strength of support for such a measure. Of the 450 or so registered forum members, 110 voted with 76 indicating a willingness to pay for The Guild Companion.

On the basis of that poll (and taking various other issues into account), we have decided that it would be impractical to convert The Guild Companion into a subscription-based format at this time. Likewise creating a new subscription-based electronic magazine to run in parallel with The Guild Companion is also not feasible. It's all about the numbers, both absolute and relative. There simply aren't sufficient willing subscribers to provide the income required to pay for enough quality content. Without enough quality content, the magazine won't attract new subscribers and grow. Lacking that critical mass of initial subscribers, any magazine would be doomed to a vicious circle and eventual oblivion.

So The Guild Companion will remain a free magazine for the foreseeable future.

More Articles Wanted!

Last month's call for articles coaxed a number of you into submitting contributions. Some of these are appearing in this month's issue; others are still at various stages of our editing process.

The Guild Companion still needs more submissions from you. Submit your articles to me at nhmc1@hermes.cam.ac.uk.

Module Progress Report

The Collector, our first projected campaign module, has run into some unexpected problems. As its authors have acquired substantial family, study and work commitments since we first commissioned the project, it will not be possible to resolve the problems in a reasonable time-frame. It is with regret, therefore, that we will not be able to offer The Collector as a commercially available module.

All is not lost, however. The authors have agreed to permit The Collector to be serialized as a set of articles in forthcoming issues of The Guild Companion. Watch this space!

Farewell (for now ...)

Our next issue will appear in October, but until then ...

Keep gaming and have fun!
