Two Sample Crews for Spacemaster

Note: These pre-generated character groups are intended for use with the Spacemaster scenario, "Crash and Burn", published in the January 2003 issue.

Note to GM's:  The pre-generated group comes in two different privateer ships, the Yarhawk and the WindFlyer.  The two crews are dealt with separately and it is assumed that they both happened to see the battleship crash and they will be a bit hostile about whose salvage it really is.  This is just another aspect to add chaos to the adventure, since in a one-shot party conflict can be quite rewarding.

  • Commentary:  Vic and Karnage improved their freighter and armed it, but still really are not enough of a crew to get everything done.  In consequence, pieces of the ship are always still in need of repair.  All criticals against this ship receive a +5 bonus.

Victoria "Vic" Ast

  • Ex-Smuggler Privateer
  • Background:  Victoria grew up on the few rough streets left in the universe.  She made her way in smuggling rings as a child (no one checks the kid for the goods—at least not too often) and other various seedy professions until the Privateer Laws were instated, at which time she gave up this working for others.  She took the small freighter she was currently using for smuggling and turned it into a small fighter in order to make some real profit.  During her time smuggling, she happened to run into Karnage.  He helped her out of some messes and she finds that running around with a large furry beast has advantages.  That, plus he is the only person that she actually trusts.  She never has really understood him, especially since the Falar are such a heartless race, but he has always been there for her and seems to have nothing better to do then hang out with a petty (not for long!) smuggler.
  • Personality:  Vic is self-reliant and arrogant.  She has survived this long only with Karnage's help and she believes that she can continue that way.  (She should be played as a Han Solo type, if that isn't obvious yet.  She even has a Wookiee.)  To some extent, her abandonment by her parents has left her trusting no one, trying to avoid that particular hole in her life.  As far as men are concerned, she likes to toy with them but does not get serious.

    • 180 cm, 65 kg, black hair, dark eyes, pale skin

  • Appearance:  Vic stands reasonably tall with dark hair tied back framing her pale face and dark eyes.  When observed closely, they are probably a dark hazel, but it is hard to tell for sure.  She wears black pants and a white shirt, with a blaster at her side at all times.  She is a picture of physical perfection; her body is well proportioned and lined with muscles—and she knows it.
  • Special:  Vic can tell when bad things are about to happen.  She just gets a feeling.  She is also lucky (OEH 95–00) as well as unlucky (OEL 01–06).  Because of her great agility, all fumble ranges are halved.

Karnage

  • Exiled Falar, Mean Furry Sidekick
  • Background:  Karnage had a problem.  Effectively, he did not believe all other races were subservient to the Falar.  This got him in a lot of trouble.  Enough trouble, in fact, that because of a particular incident wherein he freed a slave, he was given his society's worst punishment—exile.  This upset him, of course, but it also let him go see the wider world.  Eventually, he ran into the beautiful smuggler Vic, whom he aided and decided to accompany.
  • Personality:  Karnage is a Falar, which means he is a bad-tempered large ball of fur with claws and muscle.  He also manages to feel for others—a very un-Falar-like trait—and generally to care about the state of the world.  This does not mean he will not break laws, just that he does not really like seeing people hurt unless it is necessary.  For this reason, he will never strike a blow unless struck first or he is defending someone (usually Vic).

  • Appearance:  Karnage is intimidating.  He is huge, covered in dark brown fur with a slight striped pattern, and heavily armored.  He has a plasma cannon and a Hazzok strung over his back.  Mostly, being Falar, he looks like an overgrown tiger.

Marcus Falk

  • Captain of the WindFlyer
  • Background:  When he was young, Marcus' father left him a huge sum of money.  Marcus took this money and his curious nature and went to explore the galaxies.  However, the war stopped much of his exploration as just flying between planets became hazardous on a regular basis.  Therefore, he became a privateer in order both to do the exploring and to be able to fight back.  At that point, he hired on Barbara and Terrence Earie to help.  Antolis was always traveling with Marcus, and is a good old friend who shares his innate curiosity.
  • Personality:  Calm and quiet, Marcus is almost an archetypal leader.  He is stern when he needs to be, and caring when he needs to be.  He does not take to bickering; he just does what needs to be done to get the job done.  Despite his best wishes, he has been quite taken with Barbara's naive charm and zest for life.  He has not and will not admit this, however.

Antolis

  • Master Technician
  • Background:  Antolis, an Oort, grew up attempting to learn everything he could about everything.  He tended to shun the standard ways of learning, such as the institutions, and to focus on just discovering everything for himself.  Being extremely intelligent, this has not posed much of a challenge, but he has been working happily with Marcus for years to try to explore parts of the galaxy never yet explored.  He is particularly fascinated by the Architects, and plans to discover all of their secrets eventually.  He does not take the new job of being a privateer as a great thing, but he understands the necessity.
  • Personality:  Antolis likes to take things apart.  He is always looking at the best side of things.  He is never arrogant despite having an IQ equal to that of the rest of the crew combined.  (That is, it is extremely high, even for an Oort.)  Antolis is small, optimistic, and overly curious.  He believes that curiosity only killed the cat because it was a dumb animal and was not able to deal with what it found.  He somewhat thinks that of Humans too.  But whatever the case, he is almost always talking about something and generally always sees the best possible outcome for any problem.  The crew likes him, and he even takes all the "cute" remarks reasonably well.

Barbara

  • Runaway
  • Background:  Barbara's family was very rich —- and very snobbish about it as well.  She just didn't understand why things needed to be nice or clean or why hanging out with gang members was bad or anything, really, because it was fun and fun is important.  Therefore, she ran away from home and used the money she took with her to replace her eyes with cool violet eyes that can see better and farther then her old eyes and don't require any real maintenance.  Privateering sounded fun, so after running around the streets for a while, that is what she decided to do.  She signed on with Marcus (who is very cute), Antolis the furball (who is very cute), and Terrence Earie the brash youngster (who is just cute).
  • Personality:  Barbara likes fun and always needs to be doing something entertaining.  If nothing else is going on, there are always men with whom to flirt.  Generally, she has no self-control at all and generally gets her way by persistence.  She really doesn't understand what the world is like despite her experiences.  She doesn't really learn or see beyond herself.

Terrence Earie

  • Young Hired Gun
  • Background:  Terrence grew up dissatisfied with his complacent life as the son of a tradesman.  He took off from home at an early age and joined the military, but couldn't take the discipline, so he left and started looking for a job as a privateer.  Marcus found him and he has been on the ship for some time now.  Terrence is in charge of boarding and military operations and generally tries to carry his gun with him everywhere.
  • Personality:  Terrence is young, but never admits to it.  He is a little hot tempered and he certainly believes that nothing can kill him.  His only reason for this belief is that he is still alive and that's enough for him.  He is a little brash but generally not arrogant.  He really likes the new crewmember Barbara, but she seems to think the captain is better than he is.  Terrence feels the need to prove himself in her eyes, despite the fact they have actually grown quite close over the last couple of months.
