This is my attempt at a character design worksheet for use with HARP.
We used it when rolling up characters for a playtest game and it was certainly an improvement on paper and pens, more than that I leave for the user to judge.

The spreadsheet is split into three areas:

  • A stat and skillsheet area on the left (columns A through I), this is designed to be the printable area of the spreadsheet and should fit onto a single side of A4.
  • A skill worksheet area to the right (columns J through AF), where you enter the number of ranks in particular skills purchased at each level.
  • A lookup table area to the extreme right (columns AG through CW), which is hidden by default and contains the static data used in the calculations.
Note that most of the cells on the spreadsheet are locked, and the sheet is protected by default. This is purely to prevent accidental overtyping of formula information by the user - there is no password on the spreadsheet. If you wish to alter the spreadsheet simply go into 'Tools' - 'Protection' - 'Unprotect Spreadsheet' and edit away.
Note also that most of the skill total fields are set to display 'white on white' (i.e. be hidden) if the total skill is less than or equal to zero, this makes the skill sheet much easier to read in my humble opinion.

Using the spreadsheet to design a character:

  • Select your Race, Culture, and Class from the select lists in fields B13 - B15. This will fill in your racial stat bonuses and resistance rolls, cultural skill ranks and category skill point costs. It will also set your hit point and power point progression rates and your class dependent spell stat.
    Note that if you are playing a Human or Greater blood talent then you will need to edit the Race bonuses in fields F2 - F9 to reflect your chosen bonuses.
  • Next enter your purchased / rolled stats in the stat Value field in fields A2 - A9. My apologies, but I had to rearrange the stat list into Alphabetical order to get the stat value lookups to work correctly. Your stat bonuses, DPs and stat costs will all be calculated for you. Enter any miscellaneous stat bonuses in the Misc column to finalize the stat bonus and Resistance Roll calculations.
  • Scroll across to column T and enter your chosen Class skill ranks. The counter in T2 will keep track of how many ranks you have allocated, green indicates fewer than 20 ranks allocated, red means more than 20, and black means spot on.
  • Now purchase skill ranks for level 1 (and higher if creating a higher level character) in column U. Again a running total is kept in the top row, this time of DPs expended. This counter will turn red if the total number of DPs available from your stats is exceeded (or DPs x 2 in the case of first level).
    Note that this spreadsheet does not take any account of talents, nor of DPs spent upon them - so remember to keep some DPs back for those as well!
    Note that the skill progression table only goes up to 30 ranks - but that should be enough to keep you going up to 9th level at least.
  • When purchasing weapon skills and spells overtype the generic 'Primary Weapon', 'Spell 1' etc. descriptions in column J with the actual names of the weapon or spell being learned - the cells are left unlocked to allow this, and the modified names will automatically be copied into the skill list in the printable area of the character sheet.
  • Fill in any miscellaneous skill bonuses from talents, equipment or racial abilities in column R to finalize the skills calculations.
  • Fill in your armour, shield, and miscellaneous DB modifiers to finalize the DB calculation.
  • Fill in your initiative value
  • Fill in your Character name, level, Armour & shield & talent list.
  • Print the sheet and away you go.
    Note that the skill summary list is presented in what I think is the most useful order - Perception, OBs, Endurance and Power points at the top, with the rest of the skills in alphabetical order underneath, except for the spells which all appear at the end. It has always been my opinion that failing to be able to find your own perception skill should count as a failed roll, so I've tried to make it stand out from the crowd :)
