Thieves' World - Training Packages

Welcome to the third article of the series... No, it is not the discussion of gods and religion that was previously promised (that topic is still under development). This month the article focuses on the idea of Training Packages and includes some conversions for Prestige Classes that were presented in Green Ronin's Thieves World Players Manual.

In HARP, the topic of Training Packages includes the following guidelines -- both of which are adhered to with this conversion:

  • Characters are limited to learning no more than 1 Training Package each level.
  • If the skill ranks gained from a TP would give a character more skill ranks than the skill ranks per level limit, then those extra ranks are lost.

For Designing Training Packages the rules state:

  • A TP should never contain more than 20 skill ranks total
  • A TP should never have less than 2 ranks in any given skill
  • A TP should never have more than 5 ranks in any given skill

Training Packages by definition have a cost equal to the standard cost of the ranks gained less 25%. The example provided states that if ranks equal to 20DP are gained, then the character is charged 15DP for the Training Package. Also, Training Packages are not supposed to include Talents or Stat Development.... These policies are ignored for my conversions. The costs for the Training Package is fixed regardless of development costs associated with the individual skills -- however they are based upon standard development costs and should be in line with most costs.

For my Training Packages there are significant Pre-requisites and the full Training Packages are tiered across multiple TP developments at increasing levels. To display this three Training Packages are presented for your review and use.

As done in previous articles for this conversion -- it is not possible to provide the descriptive or background information. For that you will need the Green Ronin book.

Cirdonian Caravan Master

Pre-Requisites:

Cirdonian Culture

Navigation -- 9 Ranks

Survival (Plains) -- 9 Ranks

Toughness Talent

Tier 1 Development Cost: 14DP

  • Appraisal -- 2 Ranks
  • Trading -- 2 Ranks
  • Combat Strategy (Caravan) Talent (See full description under New Talents)
    • Minimum time to prepare 5 minutes. Must be able to give direction to all involved from a leadership position. All allies gain +10 to OB and +20 to DB for better use of cover

Tier 2 Development Cost: 12DP

  • Navigation -- 3 Ranks
  • Survival (Plains) -- 3 Ranks
  • Compass Cantrip Blood Talent
    • Cast at will if under an open sky

Tier 3 Development Cost: 15DP

  • Toughness Talent
    • Stacking is permitted for this application.
  • Resistance (Stamina) -- 5 Ranks

  • Tongues Spell (Language Level 2) Blood Talent
    • Cast at will

    • A psychic awareness of other Blue Adept's presence (100 feet/level)

    • Hidden secret that if it becomes known, the Blue Adept loses all benefits of Blue Star Training Packages

    • Secret restriction or requirement for the Adept that must be maintained or else special atonement needs to be done

NEW TALENTS

Combat Strategies

Cost: 15DP

While combat styles and maneuvers are skills for individuals in using their weapon(s), combat strategies are not isolated to a single character and apply to all individuals involved in applying the strategy. In some cases they may be able to gain the benefits of the strategy simply by giving direction, while other situations require all involved to be familiar with the strategy techniques.

(Note: These strategies could have been documented as skills, but my preference was to include them as Talents for ease of application.)

Caravan:

  • Minimum time to prepare 5 minutes.
  • Must be able to give direction to all involved from a leadership position.
  • All allies gain +10 to OB and +20 to DB for better use of cover.

United Attack:

  • Use of team tactics to assault a single foe.
  • Each ally must have this talent.
  • Each ally gets +5 OB per additional person (other than themselves) attacking the same target
  • Max bonus +25 OB (6 allies attacking 1 foe)

Example:

3 Hell Hounds surround one escaped gladiator. The gladiator is skilled with combat, but the Hell Hounds know how to work together. Each Hell Hound gains +10 to their OB.

Persuasive

Cost: 20DP

+15 to all Influence skills.
