Four Rolemaster Creatures

"Golden deer are normal, albeit very swift animals."

The following creatures are four examples of ordinary, if not everyday, creatures that can be found in a typical campaign. While not every animal must be a ferocious beast or fearsome monster, inoffensive creatures such as these can be a springboard for adventures, and prove of interest for trade-minded characters as well. As a result, a sample idea of developing an adventure around them has been given, ready for your development and integration into your campaign; these are suitable for low-powered characters, and should prove a break from the usual dungeon bash.

Alpine Hares

The alpine hare is related to other hares and rabbits; however, it is rarer and found only on alpine meadows. Its fur is thicker than its lowland cousins—uniform grey in summer, and white in winter, with a slight, blue tinge. It is an ordinary animal, a creature of no repute or interest, save for the fact that its winter skins are prized by the furriers of some races, notably dwarves, gnomes, and many halflings. It has been domesticated by many alpine races, bred for the winter fur and the meat, and usually kept in hutches and movable pens on the alpine slopes.

Adventure idea: The rich wife of a trader has seen some visiting Dwarven traders wearing an unusual, yet attractive white fur on their clothes. She is willing to sponsor a party of adventurers to not only research the fur, but also provide her with enough samples to make a luxurious coat.

Deer of the Dusk

These creatures live almost exclusively in the deep forest, where they hide from predators most of the time, and rarely (if ever) venture forth. The only time that they are usually seen is the deep evening, when they venture forth to drink at the edges of rivers, pools and lakes, and even then they are skittish, quickly running if disturbed.

Only if cornered, and when their young are threatened, will these deer turn to fight, males employing thin but sharp antlers that glimmer like wan stars, females preferring to butt with their heads. The males shed these antlers at the end of every winter, and the antlers are prized by elves and other sylvan folk for their strength and lightness.

Adventure idea: The party is approached by a scholar, a zoologist/artist, who is interested in being escorted into the wilderness to draw, and possibly paint, the elusive deer of the dusk. Unfortunately for him, the local wood elves do not appreciate trespassers, so it may be up to the party to negotiate a visit with them, as well as to locate the deer.

Gilled Antelopes

This is an antelope that has the capability to breathe underwater using a set of gills on its muzzle. Normally, it uses this capacity while it crosses rivers and lakes, when it usually keeps its muzzle barely submerged, or when it feeds upon aquatic plants for hours at an end. It is also used as a defensive measure: if flight is not an option, and if it is able to, the gilled antelope will swim into lakes and submerge itself, in order to hide from ill-equipped predators and enemies.

A shy creature, the gilled antelope is so rare that many experts have yet to sight one; often rewards are posted for live, breeding pairs, although these have rarely been seen, and the gilled antelope has yet to breed successfully in captivity.

Adventure idea: A local ruler has put up a prize for a breeding pair of gilled antelopes. The money offered is handsome enough to catch the eye of a party eager for more magic.

Golden deer

Golden deer are normal, albeit very swift animals. Their hooves are the color of molten brass, and their antlers, sported by the males, are a light golden color. As the antlers are prized, and as they have been overhunted, they are very rare, which is a pity, as they are rather shy and inoffensive creatures.

Adventure idea: A rich, and crass, merchant desires the antlers of a golden deer, and is looking for a hunting party that will lead him straight to some. Will the money be worth it (especially given the merchant's demeanor), or should the merchant be foiled in his quest?
